Zambezi River fishing banWhere you can fish and where you can’t.Although very little is known about the breeding patterns of the tigerfish of the upper Zambezi , it is thought to occur over the flood period when waters are the highest from March, April and May. Spawning occurs on the flooded banks of the main channel and backwaters. While we welcome any rest of the river it must be noted that the ban has no scientific thinking regarding when bans should occur. Countries like Namibia and Zimbabwe do not have the ban in place but enforce a strict “catch and release” code of conduct. The downside of imposing a ban during peak summer fishing and tourism times is obviously a negative impact on lodges, guides and all the “wash down” businesses that enjoy the benefits of sport fishing on the Zambezi. |

We know the fishing is good however due to the rivers rocky structure (its not the Barotse) it is not known for “trophy” sized tigers.

Since our inception (1998), I have picked up many “hacks” to make travelling so much easier. below are my African Travel tips pertaining to TigerFishingZambezi and AdventureOnFly |
| |
Buy a Dragon Pass or obtain a credit card Which will give you access to the lounges that exist in most airports, the ability to enjoy free refreshments and even a shower makes your journey into Africa so much more pleasurable. In January I was transiting through Addis Ababa and a Heineken plus pizza slice came in at a whopping $25, so beware! |
| |
Book the front seats
as you will get off the plane first. |
| |
Arrive at least two hours prior to departure time and double check your passport is valid for 6 months and has two clean pages. |
| |
Your SA passport is gold in Africa
You avoid hefty visa fees that other passports “enjoy”… |
| |
Be nice to immigration officials They have the power to send you home! |
| |
Double check your itinerary
Regarding flights, occasionally a client will book a Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe flight (as it was maybe cheaper) only to discover that the road transfer is from Livingstone and sorry but we can’t just nip across the border and fetch you. |
| |
Book Priority boarding It’s a lousy R50 but you get on first, leave first and then have space in the overhead before the hoards get on. |
| |
Reels and any tackle must be put in your check in luggage.
Buy four piece rods and most airlines turn a blind eye if you have a small rod tube as carry on. |
| |
Leave nets and Boga grips at home! In fact don’t use a Boga Grip period, they look ugly in the pics and hurt the fish! |
| |
Cut down on your clothing
Most if not all lodges will do a mid-stay wash, I take one pair of travel shorts/2 Tshirts, two pairs of quick dry shorts, 3 long sleeve fishing shirts lightweight, 3 pairs of undies or go commando 😉 one rain jacket. This will allow you to take more fishing gear as your total allowance is usually only 20kg. I also use none slip neoprene short booties (with socks) on the boat, they are brilliant and comfy for the whole day while providing grip, Bring good cap and buff plus 50 Block sun screen. |
| |
Bring: Torch, headlamp, mozzie spray both repellent and Doom, bum wipes (you never know!) |
| |
Check you have your meds in your hand luggage
as it’s impossible to get up there if your bag gets lost. |
| |
Take some mid-day energy bars or snacks You expend a huge amount of energy being on an open boat 9 hrs a day and more. |
| |
Please note:
We cannot deviate and organize a “tour of Vic Falls, shopping, curio store stops” as your bus will probably have other clients who are keen on only getting to the lodge as quickly as possible. We also have tight schedules as some lodges involve a few border crossings. We suggest that you add on a night via VicFallsConnection www.vicfallsconnection.com if you want to do anything that is over and above your fishing package. |
| |
Bring cash tips for your guide ranging from R300 – R600 per person per day and always listen to your guide, he knows the hotspots and he is 100% dedicated to getting you onto your best fish. |

TigerFishingZambezi offers “one on one” consultations
with our inhouse Zambezi guide, this is available free to all our clients and is usually done via WhatsApp call or email: Contact Chris 083 453 774 or chris@tigerfishingzambezi.com know before you go! |
| |
catch and release All our trips are undertaken with the understanding that we practice a strict “catch and release” ethos. We do not allow clients to “take one for the pot” our reasons are mainly for the sustainability of the Zambezi. We do offer farmed bream and chips on most of our trips if you feel the need to eat a local fish. |
| |
Drinks
All lodges now have a policy of not allowing clients to bring own drinks, we do occasionally allow clients to bring “special wine” not available in our countries of operation but any wine brought in will incur corkage fees. Drinks prices are affordable and comparative to most South African pubs. |
| |
Bluetooth Music Boxes All lodges have been in touch with us and asked us to advise our clients that personal Blue Tooth/WIFI music boxes have become a disturbance for other clients wishing to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the amazing places you are fishing at. It is not our intention to ruin your fun and enjoyment but we believe that the use of these devices has now reached levels that have led to them to having to call it a day. Our apologies but this has now become a real problem for the lodges and clients. |

Self-Drive Clients: Be Prepared!
Ensure that that have all the CORRECT documentation to enter their vehicles/trailers into Botswana, Zimbabwe & Zambia. This includes Police Clearance Certificate from Interpol, obtainable at SAPS, and if not outright owners of the vehicle, letter of permission from the owner, (i.e. Banks if on lease, Company if company owned even if it’s your company, or fleet management service and even your spouse if in his/her name and they are not travelling with you) |
| |
You will need to pay insurance, road taxes, carbon taxes, bridge tolls (if crossing) and council taxes (Zambia) on arrival. It also helps to have the correct currency to make payments at entry points, although some Border Authorities do take credit/debit cards.
If travelling through Botswana you will need to check what current restrictions are in place regarding food, this can change without notice. |
